In 1979, Tom Scaglione had a long discussion with NFL player, Darryl Stingley of the New England Patriots. They spoke about Darryl's recent spinal cord injury, which took place during a NFL game. Darryl Stingley, described many of the hardships he faces including his paralysis (quadriplegic) and confinement to a wheelchair. The conversation turned to the question, what happens when a young high school or college athlete suffers a similar serious neck injury? The family of the youngster will need to know where to turn for help? They will need to contact healthcare specialists, physicians and local therapists. There is a need for specialized equipment from wheelchairs, retrofitting the home to a customized lift and van for transportation. Where does the family turn for help once their youngster leaves the rehabilitation facility? The non-profit charity, (nada) National Association for Disabled Athletes., was formed 45 years ago, with the goal to provide information and to assist these families. All of us volunteering and working together to help paralyzed children fight to recover. And to take some of the enormous burden from the family who are searching for answers.
The National Association for Disabled Athletes (nada) goal is to provide emotional assistance to strengthen the ability of the young athlete and family to deal with the daily challenge of serious athletic injury. When Darryl Stingley was paralyzed by an on-field spinal cord injury in 1978 we realized that youngsters with similar injuries needed help after they left the rehabilitation Hospital. At the National Association for Disabled Athletes (nada) we want to keep sports safe for everyone. And when a child is injured, we want to volunteer to help.
The differing ages, backgrounds, skill sets, and experience levels of our team means that there’s a unique perspective just waiting to be heard. When we create a safe space where individuals can work together as a team without the fear of criticism, new ideas and perspectives will start to flow.

Athletics can be critical to a child's development. Over 45 years ago, Tom Scaglione with the help of New England Patriots, #1 Draft pick, wide-receiver, Darryl Stingley formed a "non-profit, all volunteer" charity to assist youngsters paralyzed in athletic competition. These injuries can occur as a result of a swimming pool or lake diving accident. Or during a high school or college football game. Our goal is also to promote sports safety by teaching youngsters to use the proper athletic equipment, techniques, training and sportsmanship.
Tom Scaglione created an NADA Board and asked a number of prominent college and professional sports Hall of Fame athletes to join our board. We also reached out to Business executives and political leaders to help. All were very happy to help and volunteer time. Serious head and neck injuries during athletic competition is devastating to the youngster and entire family. The National Association for Disabled Athletes (NADA) goal is to help the family and paralyzed youngster battle back from the disabling injury. Our large database of information will help direct the family where to turn for assistance. Also, we want to promote sports safety by teaching youngsters the proper use of athletic equipment. And teaching the rules and techniques necessary to keep sports safe and enjoyable. At the (NADA) for the last 45 years, we have continued to be an "all-volunteer" charity . A special pledge Tom Scaglione and Darryl Stingley made back in 1979.
At the time, Tom Scaglione discussed the charitable idea with New York Giant Chaplin, Catholic priest Father Kenneth Moore, Tom hoped a charity could be created that was staffed by volunteers. Darryl Stingley and Father Moore agreed that not having salaried people running the nonprofit charity would be difficult, but doable. And that the charities main goal would be to provide information and help coordinate the needs of the paralyzed youngster and family once the child left the rehabilitation facility. Over the last 45 years it has worked very well. No NADA staff person, Executive Director or Board members have ever taken a salary or received compensation for their time. Everyone at NADA volunteers their time. We now have a large database of information and dedicated network of people to help us with various projects. Our NADA Sports Clinic (medical) television program has helped launch the television careers of Sports casters Beasley Reece and Oren Stevens. They along with other athletes volunteered their time to host our 90 + sports medicine television programs. But more importantly, it has provided valuable information regarding sports medicine and athletic injury prevention to the community.
